Copper/Silver Ionization for the Control of Legionellae
Metro Water Filtration now offers a copper/silver ionization system for hospitals and other buildings that are looking to control possible legionellae in the water system. While there are other treatment options for controlling legionellae, copper/silver ionization stands out because it can be used in both, hot and cold water systems.
Copper/Silver Ionization is a process that essentially introduces positively charged copper and silver ions into the water and plumbing system. These ions then attack the legionellae living within the pipes, killing these harmful pathogens.
A study by the American Journal of Infection Control found that the amount of colony forming units of Legionella (CFU) was reduced from 70% to less than 30% after treatment using copper/silver ionization (CSI). This same study also showed that CSI has been effective over a 5-year period for 16 different hospitals, demonstrating its ability for long-term use. CSI is effective for the control of both planktonic and biofilm-associated legionellae. This is important to note since planktonic legionellae are essential for the formation of biofilm-associated legionellae. Being able to control both types of legionellae are essential to keeping this disease out of the water system and under control.
In addition to being an incredibly effective method for control legionellae in water systems, copper/silver ionization is also environmentally friendly, as it does not deposit any by-products into the water.
